20 Comments:
Joel and Ethan Coen were nominated for editing Fargo under the pseudonym Roderick Jaynes in '97.. and Charlie Kaufman got an Adapted Screenplay nomination with his fictional brother Donald Kaufman for Adaptation.. so why not Soderbergh?
5:34 AM
Where are the Best Supporting Actress predictions?
And no Natalie Portman mention for Goya's Ghosts?
6:55 AM
What happened to Soderbergh's Che biography Guerrlia?
9:52 AM
Soderbergh isn't a part of the editing branch in the Academy kike Joel and Ethan Coen are. If memroy serves, that makes him ineligible. Though I could easily be wrong.
Brian, the supporting actress chart is up now. It apparently didn't get pasted from my word file. And Portman is in the sidebar, has been since the initial post.
1:22 PM
I didn't realize you had them up on the sidebar yet. Talk about laying on the line early!
I also didn't realize that Portman would be considered a supporting actress in Goya's Ghosts. Doesn't she play two roles?
Speaking of which, is the Ewan McGregor picture in which he plays four roles (Bonny Prince Charley, his double, and two actors playing the two historical figures) coming out this year?
1:44 PM
Any chance of adding ______ ?
"Freedom Writers"
lead--Hillary Swank
supporting--Imelda Staunton
2:41 PM
Doubtful The Great Pretender or Freedom Writers make 2006 releases.
3:12 PM
Yeah I just read that the Great Pretender isn't even filming until this time next year, because the director is committed to a television show in Britain. Bummer.
7:18 AM
is anyone else hoping matt damon finally gets some deserved(non-script)attention?
2:53 PM
kris why is departed so low on your chart. scorcese always does quality work
7:44 PM
I think you should put Allen in screenplay chart. He is really strong after this nod without precursors. They love him. Even if they didn't love him he should be in the chart only because of his statistics in this category.
7:03 AM
caleb roth: I have NO idea why he isn't on there. I must have deleted Scoop in one of my alterations prior to posting and didn't replace it. Thanks for noting that for me.
1:01 PM
What about the film "Charlie Wilson's War"? Sam Mendes directing, Aaron Sorkin wirting, and Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts starring? That sounds like awards heaven. Is it being pushed back to next year or do you not have any faith in it?
6:57 PM
Are these in any particular order?
And what the hell is this?
"Soderbergh isn't a part of the editing branch in the Academy kike Joel and Ethan Coen are."
11:55 PM
That totally should have said "like," not "kike." LOL Anyway, I'm judging this from a decision regarding Soderbergh's eligibility for cinematography in 2000 and could indeed be wrong. But I do think it is a mere issue of paperwork or some such nonsense and that Soderbergh may not end up eligible in these categories.
Happy to be proven wrong.
2:57 AM
kris, what are your thoughts on Little Children and Fur? I'm dying to know!
11:13 PM
Kris,
There is a guy at IMDb who claimed to have seen an early preview of Fur (the Diane Arbus biopic starring Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr).
This is what he had to say:
"I was invited for a second preview of Fur last week.
This film has undergone a number of changes since the last time I saw it.
The cinematography is excellent as I had expected it to be.
A number of scenes have been added - the opening scene showed a group of photography students at a recent Diane Arbus' exhibit. There is a showcase of some of Arbus' famous works and we can hear Kidman saying this in the background - "A photograph is a secret about a secret...the more it tells you the less you know...." Then the scene focuses on a picture of a child staring straight at you and the film slowly (very slowly) transition from color to black and white.
The story starts off in the year 1933 when Arbus was a very young girl.
Fur has one of the most memorable endings in cinematic history and one that moves me deeply.
I think we already have a winner."
"You hear it here first.
Fur will be a Best Picture contender.
Set in New York in the late 1950's, FUR conjures an image of visonary artist Diane Arbus by intertwining a fictional romance with aspects of Arbus' life in order to explore the mysterious artistic development of a woman who is now regarded as one of the most influential photographers of all time.
Likely nominations:

Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Actress in a Leading Role
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
